The national Curriculum subjects are English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education (RE), Art and Design, Music, Computing, Design and Technology, Physical Education, and for Key Stage 2 a modern foreign language.
The children are at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop and build their self-esteem and self-confidence through an exciting and meaningful curriculum. We encourage our children to have high aspirations and to strive for the best. This is underpinned by our commitment to the 5 R’s – we want our children to be respectful, responsible, resilient, resourceful and reflective. Through this, our aim is to equip our pupils with the learning and life skills they will need to successfully move onto the next phase of their lives.
Over the last year we have been developing the curriculum that we provide for our children. As well as following an english and maths curriculum we teach a topic based creative curriculum. The aim of this is to include many different subject areas into one topic in a creative and stimulating format. English and maths skills are still taught during topic time but in a way that is meaningful and with purpose. For example, in a topic about the Tudors, pupils write letters to Henry VIII to persuade him not to chop off Anne Boleyn’s head while in our Potions topic, pupils use fractions to make the perfect potions for sale in Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley!
All our children are involved in the planning stage of new topics as we value their ideas and contributions; we believe that children learn best when they are able to steer and direct their own learning. We want our children to be inquisitive and passionate about their learning and for this to spark a desire for life long learning. We believe it is important to raise children’s aspirations and to enrich their education with memorable and exciting experiences.
