Geography teaching at Ormiston South Parade Academy aims to equip each student with the knowledge, language and skills needed to understand the world around them. Our geography curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to create a curiosity of the Earth’s physical and human processes including how landscapes were created and how they’ve changed over time. By the time our pupils leave OSPA we want them to be confident, well-rounded geographers who understand and appreciate the diversity that surrounds them.
The Delivery
In the classroom, teachers are enthusiastic about geography and encourage our pupils to explore, ask questions and challenge ideas. Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of geography involves the following;
- Geography is planned in termly blocks focusing on the key curriculum strands of locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and skills and fieldwork.
- In each key stage pupils are given the opportunity to take part in a progressive fieldwork unit which utilises our school grounds and local area.
- In lessons learning is supported with the use of geographical resources including atlases, maps, digital technologies, photographs and fieldwork equipment.
- Each classroom features a working wall display that is regularly updated with key vocabulary that the children can refer to.
- The children take part in knowledge quizzes at the end of each unit to assess what they know and remember from their current unit and previous learning.
